REFUGE OF DENTS DU MIDI & SALANFE LAKE (geological path)

A two-day trek, culminating in the refuge (2’884m), located in the Dents du Midi massif with a magnificent panorama of the Alps. A view that extends from the Bernese Alps to the Mt-Blanc, passing through the 4’000 Valaisans, and overlooking the dam and the lake of Salanfe.

Followed by an educational trail on the second day around the lake, which takes you to discover the historical and geological wealth of the site.

Difficulty: Medium to easy

Meeting at Van d’en Haut for the start of the trek. A first ascent
to reach the Salanfe hostel and then after a short break. The second climb, the longest, takes us over the Lac de Salanfe to the Dents du Midi hut.

The hut is rudimentary, we have to bring up food and water. However, the bunks, wood stove and fully equipped kitchen will provide us with a pleasant fondue/raclette for the evening.

The next day, we go down to the Lac de Salanfe to follow an educational trail on the historical and geological wealth of the site. Picnic by the lake then a pleasant return to Van d’en Haut.

DAY 1

Ascent to the Dents du Midi refuge

Equipment: Anti-sweat underwear, warm clothes for the night in the hut and a waterproof jacket in case of bad weather, poles, 2.5L water bottles, thermos flask, 35L rucksack, mountain boots, silk sleeping bag, picnic.

Difficulty: 8.3 km – 1’300m difference in altitude

  • 10:00 – Check-up at the car park and first ascent to the Salanfe hostel.
  • 12:00 – Picnic by the lake.
  • 13:00 – Departure for the second ascent to the Dents du Midi hut.
  • 16:00 – Arrival at the hut. Rest, aperitif and explanations of the surrounding area. Overnight stay 24.-
  • 19:00 – Fondue/raclette dinner and sleep.

DAY 2

A trail to discover the historical and geological wealth of the site.

Equipment: Anti-sweat underwear, waterproof jacket in case of bad weather, poles, 2.5L water bottles, thermos flask, 35L rucksack, mountain boots, picnic.

Difficulty: 16 km – 1’300m decline

  • 08:00 – Breakfast and descent to the Lac de Salanfe.
  • 09:30 – Walk along the educational trail to the mines.
  • 12:30 – Picnic by the lake.
  • 14:00 – Return to Van d’en Haut.
  • 16:00 – Arrival at the car park.
